NATIONAL:

1. Juvenile Justice Act, 2015

Why in news: Supreme Court passed judgement to strengthen Juvenile Justice Act, 2015

Key points:

• Supreme Court’s judgement in “Child in Conflict with Law (CCL) through his mother v. State of Karnataka” case dealt with act’s provision for preliminary assessment of CCL in heinous offences.

• An appeal against the preliminary assessment order of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) would be filed before the Children’s Court (not Sessions Court) wherever available.

• Also, court has prescribed 30 days’ time limit for preferring such appeals.

• The time period of 3 months prescribed for completion of preliminary assessment is not mandatory but merely directory in nature.

1. Gaming Visa

Why in news: Dubai Introduced Long-Term Dubai Gaming Visa

• Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has unveiled the ‘Dubai Gaming Visa’ as part of the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033.

• The primary objective behind the introduction of the ‘Dubai Gaming Visa’ is to provide comprehensive support to skilled individuals and pioneers in the e-gaming industry.

2. British Antarctic Territory

Why in news: Russia’s Controversial Oil and Gas Discovery in British Antarctic Territory

Key points:

• Russia has claimed to have discovered massive oil and gas reserves in the British Antarctic Territory.

• British Antarctic Territory is a region currently protected under the 1959 Antarctic Treaty.

• The Antarctic Treaty, signed by numerous nations, including Russia, prohibits all oil developments in the region, designating it as a zone to be used “exclusively for peaceful purposes”.

• Russia’s discovery and potential intentions to exploit these reserves could potentially violate the terms of this treaty.

Why in news: NASA Announced plan to build first Railway System on moon

Key points:

• NASA has unveiled its ambitious plan to construct the first lunar railway system, known as FLOAT (Flexible Levitation on a Track).

• It has been designed to revolutionize payload transport on the Moon.

• FLOAT is envisioned as a robotic transport system designed to support daily operations on the lunar surface.

• Its primary functions include transporting materials, such as lunar regolith, to different areas, and facilitating the movement of equipment to and from spacecraft landing sites.

1. 3D Printed Rocket Engine

Why in news: ISRO successfully conducted hot testing of 3D printed rocket engine

Key points:

• ISRO successfully conducted hot testing of liquid rocket engine – PS4 engine (fourth stage of PSLV) – manufactured through Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology

• It was developed by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), ISRO.

• It resulted in saving of raw material usage and production time.

• AM / 3D Printing is defined as the technology that constructs a three-dimensional object from a digital 3D model by adding material layer by layer.

• It is the opposite of subtractive (traditional) manufacturing, in which an object is created by cutting away at a solid block of material.

• AM materials include thermoplastics, metal and metal alloys, ceramics and biomaterials such as bioinks.

1. Kaziranga National Park (KNP)

Why in news: KNP collected the highest revenue in its 50-year history

Key points:

• It is located in Golaghat and Nagaon districts (Assam) in the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots.

• It is situated between the river Brahmaputra in the North and the Karbi Anglong hills in the South.

• It was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

1. Military Exercise ‘Shakti’

Why in news: Umroi hosted India-France military exercise ‘Shakti’

Key points:

• The 7th edition of the India-France joint military exercise ‘Shakti’ commenced on 14th May.

• It is set to continue up until May 26, 2024, at the Joint Training Node, Umroi, Ri-Bhoi.

• This biennial training event alternates between India and France, with the last edition held in France in November 2021.

• Exercise ‘Shakti’ will enable the two sides to share their best practices in tactics, techniques and procedures of conducting joint operations.

Why in news: United Nations Declared May 25 as World Football Day

Key points:

• United Nations General Assembly has unanimously proclaimed May 25 as the World Football Day.

• The resolution coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament with representation from all regions – the 1924 Summer Olympic Games held in Paris.

• The resolution, introduced by Taher M. El-Sonni, Permanent Representative of the State of Libya to the United Nations, was passed unanimously by the 193-member General Assembly.

• World Football Day aims to celebrate the diversity and inclusivity that football embodies.
