1. Trilateral Maritime Security Workshop

Why in news: Second India,Australia,Indonesia trilateral maritime security workshop (tmsw) conducted at kochi from 15 to 17 may 24

Key points:-

• The workshop concluded after discussing the ongoing maritime security challenges and opportunities for collaboration between the three maritime neighbours in the region.

• Theme - ‘Indian Ocean Region: Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Regional Maritime Security’.

• The exercise was conducted at INS Dronacharya, Kochi, India.

• The Workshop was conducted under the aegis of Headquarters Southern Naval Command and witnessed participation of delegates from the three participating Navies.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. China Sanctions US Companies

Why in news: China sanctions US companies over arms exports to Taiwan.

Key points:-

• Commerce Ministry of China said that it will prohibit some US firms from importing and exporting activities related to China, including one selling arms to Taiwan, and forbid them from making new investments in China.

• According to state media, Boeing Defence, Space & Security was also placed on the list.

1. William Lai Ching Te

Why in news: William Lai Ching-te Sworn in as 16th President of Taiwan.

Key points:

• Dr William Lai Ching-te sworn in as the 16th President of Taiwan in a ceremony held at the presidential office in Taipei.

• William Lai Ching-te succeeded Tsai Ing-wen, the 1st female head of state of Taiwan and Asia, who served as president for 2 consecutive 4-year terms since 2016.

• Bi-khim Hsiao succeeded Lai Ching-te as the 16th Vice President of Taiwan.

2. Sanjiv Puri

Why in news: Sanjiv Puri takes over as CII president for 2024-25

Key points:-

• Chamber Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) appointed new president, Sanjiv Puri for the years 2024-25.

• He has succeeded R.Dinesh, Chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solution (TVS SCS), who served as President of CIl for 2023-24.

• CII is a non-profit and non-governmental organization.

1. Blue Origin’s NS-25 Mission

Why in news: Blue Origins NS-25 mission Lifted off with 6 Crew Members Including One Indian

Key points:-

• On 19th May 2024, New Shepard rocket system built by Blue Origin, the company owned by Jeff Bezos, under the mission named New Shepard-25 (NS-25) lifted off with 6 crew members including one Indian Gopi Thotakura, from Launch site one in West Texas, United States of America

• It is the 7th human space flight for the New Shepard program.
Gopi Thotakura

• Gopi Thotakura is the 1st Indian space tourist and the 2nd Indian to venture into space after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma of Indian Army (1984).

• He is a commercial jet pilot and entrepreneur from Andhra Pradesh(India), is the only Indian on this human space flight.

SPORTS:

1. Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Why in news: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen clinched the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as McLaren’s Lando Norris finished second.

Key points:-

• It was the 59th career win for the three-time Formula 1 world champion.

• Verstappen took his third consecutive win in Imola to take his season’s tally to five in seven races.

2. World Para Athletics Championship

Why in news: Nishad Kumar, Preethi Pal win medals at World Para Athletics Championships

Key points:-

• Nishad Kumar and Preethi Pal have clinched silver and bronze at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan.

• Kumar, a Paralympic silver medalist, secures India’s first medal with a 1.99m high jump in the T47 category, finishing second.

• Preethi Pal wins a bronze to India’s tally after finishing third in the women’s T35 200m final with a time of 30.49 seconds
