NATIONAL:

1. Greenfield Major Port at Vadhavan

Why in news: The Indian government approved Greenfield Major Port at Vadhavan, Maharashtra.

Key points:

• Cabinet has approved the construction of a new major port at Vadhavan in the Dahanu taluka of Palghar district, Maharashtra with the total cost of Rs 76,220 crores.

• This project, aligned with the PM Gatishakti programme, aims to boost India’s foreign trade capabilities and local economy.

• The Vadhavan Port, envisioned as India’s largest deep draft port, will be constructed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited.

2. World's First Jatayu Conservation Center

Why in news: World's first Jatayu Conservation Center ready in Gorakhpur Gorakhpur.

Key points:

• The world's first royal vulture breeding and conservation center is ready in Bhari Vaisi of Campierganj near Gorakhpur,Uttar Pradesh.

• The red necked vultures will be preserved and bred in enclosures in the centre.

• According to the target, there are preparations to prepare 40 pairs of vultures and release them in 15 years.

3. Govt Aims 25% Women Workforce in Aviation By 2025

Why in news: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued an advisory to the stakeholders to increase the participation of women in the aviation workforce to 25% by 2025.

Key points:

• The Aim is to break gender bias and promote women empowerment in the country.

• At present, the industry estimates an average of 5-14% presence of women workers across various roles in the aviation sector of India, with the highest representation in the pilot category at 14%.

INTERNATIONAL:

1. Global Energy Transition Index

Why in news: Sweden Tops, India at 63rd Rank on Global Energy Transition Index 2024.

Key points:

• Global Energy Transition Index released by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

• India has improved its ranking to 63rd out of 120 countries, up from 67th last year.

• Sweden has topped the Index followed by Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, & France.

• The WEF highlighted India’s significant advancements in energy equity, security, and sustainability.

2. 3,300 Year Old Ship Found in Sea near Israel

Why in news: A 3,300-year-old cargo ship has been found in the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, about 90 kilometers from the coast of Israel.

Key points:

• Bronze age objects have been found in this ship of 14th century BC.

• The ship has come to light through the joint effort of Israel's Archaeological Department and British oil and gas company Inergen.

ECONOMY:

1. India’s 4th Largest Export Market

Why in news: The United Kingdom has overtaken China to become India’s fourth-largest export market in May 2024.

Key points:

• The exports to the UK were dominated by items such as machinery, food items, pharmaceutical products, textiles, jewellery, iron, and steel, among other items.

• Top 5 India's top export market are the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, ,the United Kingdom, China

ENVIRONMENT:

1. Gomphonemoid Diatom

Why in news: Researchers have discovered a new genus of the Gomphonemoid diatom found in the clean water river of the Eastern Ghats.

Key points:

• The genus has been named Indiconema.

• The research underlines the importance of diatoms in shaping the biodiversity of India's diverse landscapes.

• Diatoms are microscopic algae that play a crucial role in our everyday lives by producing 25% of global oxygen, approximately every fourth breath of oxygen we inhale.

• Indiconema discovered by scientists of Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology,

1. N S Raja Subramani

Why in news: Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani to be vice chief of Army

Key points:

• After Lt-General Upendra Dwivedi slated to succeed General Manoj Pande as the Army chief on June 30.

• Central Command chief Lt General N S Raja Subramani will replace him as the vice chief.

2. Bhartruhari Mahtab

Why in news: President Droupadi Murmu appoints BJP's Bhartruhari Mahtab as Lok Sabha protem speaker

Key points:

• The Speaker Protem under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of Speaker till election of the Speaker.

• The President also appointed Shri Suresh Kodikunnil, Shri Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Shri Faggan Singh Kulaste and Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Members of Lok Sabha under Article 99 of the Constitution to assist Speaker Protem in Oath/Affirmation to newly elected Members of 18th Lok Sabha till election of the Speaker,”

• The first session of the eighteenth Lok Sabha will begin from June 24.

IMPORTANT DAYS:

1. International Yoga Day

Why in news: PM Modi to lead yoga day celebrations from Srinagar on June 21.

Key points:

• Theme: “Yoga for Self and Society”.

• It highlights the importance of incorporating yoga into every aspect of life for individual and community well-being.

• Since 2015, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21, following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014.

BIHAR:

1. Patna High Court Scraps 65% Reservation for Backward Classes, EBCs, SCs & STs in Bihar

Why in news: Patna High Court has cancelled the decision of the state government to increase the limit of reservation for SC, ST, EBC and other backward classes in government jobs in Bihar from 50% to 65%.

Key points:

• According to High Court this decision taken by the government is illegal and against the constitution.

• The division bench headed by the Chief Justice verdicted that 75% reservation (including 10% of EWS) is a violation of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution.

2. Bihar Metro

Why in news: Bihar government approved starting metro rail service in four cities.

Key points:

• Bihar Cabinet approved more than 20 key proposals, including metro projects for the state in Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur.

• As per the funding pattern, 20% of the amount is borne each by the central and state govts, while the metro rail corporation for each city raises the remaining 60% of the fund as a loan from financial institutions like World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

• In another major decision, the cabinet sanctioned the proposal of the govt to establish sports clubs in each of the 8,371 panchayats and 151 nagar panchayats of the state.

• The cabinet also took some major decisions in the farm sector like approval of Rs 150 crore to be paid as diesel subsidy to farmers during 2024-25 in case of irregular monsoon, rain scarcity and dry spell.

• The govt has taken guarantee for Rs 12,000 crore loan to be raised by state food and civil supply corporation for its working capital needed during paddy/rice and wheat procurement during 2024-25.
